Hi All,
Just a quick note to let you know of some info that may be of interest. Thanks to Gaelle and Maggie for passing on this information. If you ever come across anything you feel is right up our alley please don’t assume I know about it- this group is about sharing the information we know so pass it on to me and I’ll send it out (eventually).

Some of the info you will find on the above website:
WEEE is “waste electrical and electronic equipment”. It includes all types of household electrical and electronic appliances such as computers, air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, televisions, audio-visual equipment, rice cookers, electric kettles etc.
Each year, about 70,000 tonnes of WEEE are generated in Hong Kong. Some of the WEEE items are still in good operating condition and could be put to second-hand use. Many items contain components and materials which can be recovered for reuse and recycling. Indeed, most WEEE items are collected by recyclers and recycled, though some still end up in landfills, taking up valuable landfill space. Since many WEEE items contain harmful substances, improper handling may also pose potential risk to the environment.
GREEN PENG CHAU ORGANIC FARM
Is reopening. The request form is attached.
It costs $420 per month with a pick up at the Nim Shue Wan ferry pier every week on Sundays or Mondays.
You can’t get much closer to home for your organic veges unless you’ve a vege patch in your own back yard/verandah!
Buying close to home is always preferable to imported goods from overseas in regards environmental impact. All around the world market buying is becoming more and more popular for low energy consumption, freshness, taste and vitamin content. Quoting from Catherine Touzard’s book ‘Going Green in Hong Kong’ “Buy Organic Fruit and Veges……….Prices may sound a little higher than standard fresh produce but the nutritive value is up to 100% higher than the one in industrial farmed ones. Thus you get much higher value for money, while supporting sustainable, local farming.”
CARBON FOOTPRINT
WWF has a website www.climateers.org where people can go and measure their carbon footprint.
Again quoting from Catherine’s book “…If we assume world population will be 8.2 billion by 2030 that leaves each person a right to emit 0.33 tonnes of carbon per year.” So there is an aim for you!
Other sites mentioned in Catherine’s book are www.carbonfootprint.com
PLASTIC BAG USE
When it seemed the recent PnS plastic bag debacle proved Hong Kong’s general populace was in no way geared up to be environmentally friendly someone cheered me up with this article- it seems the days of disposable plastic bags are numbered. HOORAY!!

FLEA MARKET
Sunday 12-5. Bring your goods to our stall at 12 noon and pick up again if you don’t want them to go to the Salvation Army although I’ll generally try and give everything 2 chances at a flea market before I do that though storage is a problem for me. We have lots of stuff already this time so don’t feel obligated to find things just to be supportive. But you can be supportive by helping out on the day even if just for an hour. Hope to see you there and remember- reuse and recycle is the way to go to reduce our demand on the environment.
MEETING TUESDAY
Don’t forget.
