Sunday 3rd June- Helpers for flea market?

Posted on May 28th, 2012 in Beach Clean-up,Events,Fund Raising,Tree Planting by Kate Wade

Hi there,

Sunday is the flea market in the plaza and DB Green has it’s usual spot near the post office. I have lots of things left over from last time and you are all welcome to bring down your unwanted treasures for the DB Green stall. At this stage I don’t have a personal stall for you to use for selling your own things but I will enquire and see if there is any left still. Let me know if you are keen for this?

I would really like some help at this flea market as 2 of my usual helpers are  away and I also need someone to takeover for the first 1 1/2 hrs while I do dragon boat training. Is anyone free to help? Please let me know as soon as possible??

There is also tree planting 10am near the lookout- see tree planting posts for more info. There is only a small amount of trees going up on the 3rd of June so it will probably be finished early so if you can make it up closer to 10am that would be best. The following Sunday the 10th of June there will be a large amount of trees going up so planting will probably take the full 6 hrs- 10am till 4pm.

Another busy weekend!

Have a great week and safe some energy to help me on Sunday please!

Cheers,

Kate

P.S. Don’t forget beach cleanup the following Saturday 9th June- wine tasting and sausage sizzle to follow. T-shirts for the adults and also for the kiddies if they haven’t received one yet. Should be fun!

Tree Planting Every Sunday- 10am till 4pm!

Posted on May 26th, 2012 in Events,Tree Planting by Kate Wade

Hi fellow tree huggers,

We’ve 500 trees left to plant of the 1000 for this year and we’ll be out every Sunday until they are done. John, our tree planting guru will be leading the tree planting at the conservation area on the way to the Lookout. Kadoorie Farms provide us trees at a very generous rate. They are so impressed with John’s project and the care taken to plant and look after the trees that they have decided to conduct a study on the trees planted. We are trying out some new species and hence you’ll see that some of the trees have been tagged- Kadoorie will be watching these trees over the next 5 years.

Directions: If you are going up the road to the golf course take the concrete road to the right that leads to the Lookout (the pagoda). About 1/4 of the way along there is a small track on your left, down to a stream, cross over the stream and keep following the path. Look for the bamboo stakes with coloured twine tie- easily visible from the concrete path- and you’re in the right area. If you can’t find John call him on 94575548 as he may be on the back side of the hill.

What to bring: Sturdy shoes (hiking boots are great or old sneakers as it gets quite muddy sometimes), plenty of water, insect repellent, sunscreen, snacks, friends (many hands really does make light work!)

Time: Usually 10am to 4 pm or it may finish earlier if  trees taken up for the day are planted.

Dates: Every Sundayuntil they are all planted….27th May, 3rd June, 10th June ….

Even making it up for an hour or 2 is a great help.

Donating: Each tree costs $10 thanks to the generosity of Kadoorie Farms and covers the cost of the tree, bamboo, twine, equipment and transportation.

If you would like to donate to the cost of the trees you can transfer money to HSBC: 571 213511 001 or donate cash at the next flea market on the 3rd of June or beach cleanup on the 9th of June.

Happy planting,

Kate

Upcoming events- this weekend and beyond….

Posted on April 27th, 2012 in Beach Clean-up,CAS Activities,Events,Fund Raising,Tree Planting by Kate Wade
Hi there!
There are always great green things going on in our neighbourhood ……
-Dave from Hemingways is doing a fundraiser for orangutans at his birthday Saturday night if you can make it. This is a fantastic cause and Andy Stokes (Gary’s brother) has put this website together www.saveorangutans.org which has some great videos where you can watch these gorgeous animals and learn more about their plight. Check it out!
-If you are around Siena this Saturday afternoon, and if the weather is OK, there is a mini flea market 2:30 to 5:30 where Siena 2 residents can have a stall and all visitors are welcome- bound to be some bargains for you to check out. It’s being held near the Siena 2 highrise central gardens.
-Sunday there is some tree planting going on with Novotel employees- experienced tree planters are wanted to help instruct. Please call John Horwood on 9457 5548 if you are able to help. Further opportunities for tree planting will be in June and July for the rest of us- dates will be published shortly.
Next beach cleanup is 19th May.
-And next flea market in the plaza is 3rd June– thankfully not the school holidays this time!

I’ll keep you posted!

Have a great weekend!

Tree Planting this weekend & donations

Posted on June 17th, 2011 in Events,Tree Planting by Kate Wade

Hi DB Green,

PLANTING THIS WEEKEND
John is hoping that the remaining trees can be planted out this weekend and would love some help! 10am till 4pm both days. Up the road towards the golf course- 2/3rds up take the concrete road to the right towards the Lookout. Look for life on the left hand side about 200m along. There is a little track you can take and crosses over a stream- John will try and put a sign there but take your phone and the numbers below.

What to bring: Water, good shoes or boots, long pants, long sleeved shirt (so as you don’t get scratched by the scrub), sunscreen, hat, mosquito repellent, food for energy, gardening gloves/spade and/or pick axe if you happen to have them (but there will be some there), phone and below numbers, money if you’d like to make a donation for the purchase of the trees.
Ph numbers: John and Tiareti Horwood: 94575548 or 97328985

TREE PLANTING DONATION
I have had a few donations- including one very generous donation of $5000! THANK YOU VERY MUCH to that family (am I allowed to say your name??) and the others who have donated! It isn’t too late to donate as we have last years trees to pay for also. Every cent goes to the cost of the trees and equipment. There are no admin costs as it is done by volunteers so you can be assured that every dollar you spend is going directly to this great project.
3 ways to donate:
– transfer money into the DB Green cheque account: HSBC 571213511001
– bring a cash donation to the flea market on the 26th June.
– bring a cash donation to the next beach cleanup on the 24th July.
$100 covers 20 trees!!
That’s it for the moment, info on last beach cleanup to come (Yes- it was still on!) Flea market NEXT weekend I will remind you before hand but I’ll need volunteers and you can clear out your house this coming week for things you don’t want anymore.
If I don’t catch you before you leave for the summer then please have a wonderful, safe and happy summer break. For those of you staying here with me and my family I look forward to seeing you around the traps!
Kind regards,
Kate

Hi DB Green,

TREE PLANTING DONATION
It’s that time of year to pay for the trees we’ve been planting. Kadoorie farms actually gives us the trees at a great rate and we have only spent $5000 this year and the same again last year on trees. We also have other costs including bamboo stakes, wire mesh, twine and a few tools. I neglected to get any donations from anyone last year so am looking for donations to cover both years. Every cent goes to the cost of the trees and equipment. There are no admin costs as it is done by volunteers so you can be assured that every dollar you spend is going directly to this great project.
2 ways to donate:
– transfer money into the DB Green cheque account: HSBC 571213511001
– bring a cash donation to the beach cleanup on June 12th.
$100 covers 20 trees!! Now isn’t that a worthwhile way to spend 100 bucks!!

PLANTING THIS WEEKEND
More tree planting this Sunday. 10am till 4pm. Up the road to the golf course- 2/3rds up take the concrete road to the right towards the Lookout.

HARDENED BEACH CLEANER UPPERS!!
Thanks to those people who despite the weather did some cleaning on Sunday- here’s what Tracey wrote on the website….
“I just want to say a huge thank you to John who was on the beach cleaning all morning & also inspired 11 year olds Elaine & Julian as well as their mum Jackie to help. Sam Richard & I came down after dragon boat training & together we managed to clear 10 big garbage bags of rubbish from the beach. Great effort guys (especially from the kids!) on what was a truly wet & wild day!” Tracey

Kind regards all and have a fab weekend,

Great GREEN weekend!

Hi DB Green!!

What a great green weekend we have in store!! We are doing my 2 favourite activities that make me feel better than any spa, lighten my spirit better than any spirits and leave me tired but absolutely happy!! Try it out and see if it has the same miraculous result for you….

SATURDAY- TREE PLANTING 10am-4pm
10am till 4pm at the same point as before. Up the road to the golf course- 2/3rds up take the concrete road to the right towards the Lookout.

Ph numbers: John and Tiareti Horwood: 94575548 or 97328985
Kate and Nick: 98109070 or 98161450

SUNDAY- BEACH CLEANUP 9am-1pm
Nim Shue Wan beach (on the way to the Marina club) and especially we’ll be especially aiming to get as many able bodied folk to the beaches beyond. We’re hoping for a big turnout so please bring your friends and family and we will have a sausage sizzle and drink afterwards again. Please if there is something else you’d prefer to eat than sausages (we’ll have meat or vege) then feel free to bring and we’ll pop it on the BBQ. If you are dragon boat training we hope to see you before or after. I will also have a donation box which will go towards raising money for the tree planting and BBQ costs.
What to bring: Water bottle (which we can refill), sunscreen, mosquito repellent, hat.
I’d just like to give a little acknowledgement which I don’t do often enough….

First to give a big thanks to John and Tiareti for their amazing commitment to the tree planting project which aims to reforest our conservation area as it would have been before mankind’s interference. Their devotion to this project is unparalleled and the labour involved in this project is intensive.
To Tracey and Ange for their ongoing commitment to our beaches and ocean life. They have a beach cleanup planned for every month over the next 6 months and are really enthusiastic about getting the community involved as much as possible, especially our youngsters. Though they have it like a well oiled machine nowadays, there is always still lots of personal time involved in the planning, preparation and execution of these days.
Always a  big thanks to Hemingways for their help with the BBQ and their continual support of DB Green.
Both of these are great events because of the people who organise them and the people who turn up to them- the company is always so good and you always walk away feeling refreshed and renewed (despite how you sometimes might LOOK quite the opposite!)
Hope to see you at one or both of these events! Have a great weekend!

Tree Planting this weekend (19/20 March)

Posted on March 17th, 2011 in Events,Tree Planting by Kate Wade

Hi folks,

Its that time of year- the birds are starting to chirp, the bees are starting to buzz, there’s frogs afoot and those pesky midgees/can’t-see-um bugs are back in action. It must be spring! And that means it’s tree planting time and we’re starting this weekend. John and Tiariti picked up 1000 trees yesterday and they will need volunteers to help this weekend. Unfortunately I’m away on leave for a few weeks so I’m counting on some of you to lend a hand and plant a tree or ten. 🙂

The location will be similar- head up the hill to wards the golf course- about 2/3rds up turn right at the concrete road that takes you to the Lookout, walk about 200m and look for life on the left hand side. You can see the trees we’ve planted in previous years as they’re planted with stakes. Please take John’s phone number with you though so you can call him in case he’s on other side of the hill and you can’t spot him. John also tells me there is a map in Uncle Russ’s in the plaza and I shall also attempt to attach one.

We are aiming to plant 1000 trees initially, and with enough volunteers over the next month to help plant, we might even be able to order another 1000!

Time: 10am till 4pm both Saturday and Sunday this weekend (19th 20th March)

What to bring: Water, good shoes or boots, long pants, long sleeved shirt (so as you don’t get scratched by the scrub), sunscreen, hat, mosquito repellent, food for energy, gardening gloves/spade and/or pick axe if you happen to have them (but there will be some there), phone and below numbers. And a small donation for the trees if you would like to.

Ph numbers: John and Tiareti Horwood: 94575548 or 97328985

Have a great weekend- please do your best to get up there sometime in the weekend if you can (and make up for Nick and I being away!) The conservation area will love you for it!

UPCOMING EVENTS: Further tree planting events in April- probably every weekend. Flea Market 10 April 12noon till 5pm. Possibly a beach cleanup too!

Click for map and more info:Tree Planting Location – 19th and 20th March

Kind regards,
